Sylvia “Show” Green: The Voice
If you happen to be a brand-new or underground artist looking to gain more exposure to your music, then look no further than On Blast Radio Atlanta. Founded by lifelong music lover and Detroit native Sylvia “Show” Green, this internet-based station caters to independent artists to give them a platform to appeal to new listeners. Along with radio spins, the On Blast Radio Atlanta also allows small business owners and entrepreneurs on-air interviews, marketing and promotions.
Since its inception back in January, the station has become so influential that it was recently nominated for 2020 Indie Radio Platform of the Year for Southeast Independent Awards. As brainchild for the operation, this is just the beginning for Green. The best is yet to come.
Our people need to be uplifted and made to believe we can do and be whatever we chose so long as we do the work. And you’re not alone! -Sylvia “Show” Green
Q&A
Tell us about yourself.
Perseverance could be my middle name. I’m just a hardworking, passionate lover of entertainment. Music has been a long-time joy of mine. That along with my empathic heart lead me to my purpose, which is to create a lane for those like me who don’t have the help I so desperately needed when first pursuing my music talents.
Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur?
Yes, I knew at a very young age that I was going to be an entertainment mogul.
If you could pick the brain of any business mogul who would it be and why?
Sean “Diddy” Combs (because) he encompasses everything I see myself being give and take a little (laughs).
What are you passionate about?
My morals, integrity, anything I place my name on and/or manpower behind, positive change for our community, aiding those in need.
What is your why?
When I needed someone, all I received was a bunch of empty promises and or discouragement. Our people need to be uplifted and made to believe we can do and be whatever we chose so long as we do the work. And you’re not alone!
What is something you can’t live without?
Radio, phone, my cousin Adrienne
Why did you start On Blast Radio Atlanta?
We created an affordable platform where they can market their brand to a vast new audience.
Did you start your business on your own or did you have a team?
The vision was long time childhood dream. I’ve definitely had a bit of help along the way but of course most of the sweat is off my back (laughs).
Does your business cater solely to the LGBTQ+ community?
No. I would say it has a major focus there because I am a part of the community, but we cater to everyone who is actively working to attain their dreams and goals.
What made you pursue this business?
Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My mom called me the human jukebox. My passion and interest in music influenced most of my business ventures.
What are some challenges you have faced while building your brand?
Where do I start??? The first would be having to be a one-woman band with so many important roles to be played. People understanding that you’re a business not a hobbyist or charity. Building real networking relationships with other entrepreneurs.
What (if any) obstacles have you faced being an LGBTQ+ business owner?
Squeezing the pennies while still maintaining quality work. Focusing on us while still being inclusive to everyone.
What was your greatest accomplishment in your business?
Launching (laughs). It was definitely a long time coming, but in seven short weeks, we’ve accomplished so much: magazine write up, award nomination, podcast invites, live broadcast invites.
If you could have done anything differently while starting or growing your business, what would it be?Have more money, not allow so many things to hold me back.
What advice would you give to up and coming LGBTQ+ business owners?
Never give up. If you dream it, you can attain it! Push yourself like you never thought you could. Get all negative thoughts out of your head.
Where do you see your business in the next five years?
Expansion, syndication, the launch of other ON BLAST ventures.
At this moment, is this where you imagined your business would be?
Not at all…so much has happened in a very positive way at a very fast pace!
Are your family and friends supportive of your business?
My family and friends have been amazing. I so very thankful and grateful for them.
