We've all heard the legends of Kowloon Walled City, but few truly knew what life was like inside the semi-lawless neighbourhood. That's exactly why Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In struck such a chord with audiences, so much so that it dominated the 43rd HK Film Awards by taking home nine trophies out of its 14 nominations. And now, it's all coming full circle. Returning to the original site that inspired it all, the exhibition allows visitors to step back into the 1980s, explore meticulously recreated shops and scenes, and immersive themselves in the infamous Walled City. Hong Kong’s giant panda twin cubs are officially named Jia Jia and De De

Just when you think the ‘pandamania’ is slowly calming down in the city, Ocean Park is ramping up the excitement once again with an announcement of the official names for Hong Kong’s beloved panda twin cubs! Here’s what you need to know about the newly named pair. What are the names of the giant panda twins in Hong Kong? On August 15, 2024, the city’s beloved giant panda Ying Ying became the oldest first-time giant panda mum on record, having given birth to two twin panda cubs – affectionately nicknamed ‘Elder Sister’ and ‘Little Brother’ just a day before her 19th birthday. ‘Elder sister’ is now named Jia Jia, while De De is the official name for ‘Little Brother’!  Photograph: Courtesy Ocean Park Hong Kong The meaning of Jia Jia and De De Jia Jia (加加) uses the Chinese character '加' to convey the message of support, like the common Chinglish phrase 'add oil' (加油). The word 'jia' is also a homophone for the Chinese characters '家', meaning home, and '嘉', meaning auspices, in both Cantonese and Putonghua. 'Jia' also features an element of family, embodying the prosperity of families as well as the happiness of the people. Meanwhile, De De (得得) means 'to succeed', symbolising that the city will be successful in everything we do. 'De' is also a homophone for the Chinese character for 'virtue' (德) in Cantonese and Putonghua, suggesting that the giant pandas, our national treasures, possess the virtues cherished by Chinese folks. How were the names Jia Jia and De De chosen? Out of

We all have our favourite neighbourhoods in Hong Kong for food, drink, and things to do – but whether they're suitable for living in is an entirely different question. Well, now there are some official numbers to back things up. According to a survey done by language learning platform Preply, which used official and public data from a range of sources, the study examined all of Hong Kong's 18 districts across multiple factors that impact everyday living, such as population density, real estate costs, safety, retail and dining options, connectivity, and environmental factors like air and water quality and noise levels. Yuen Long claimed the top spot as Hong Kong's most liveable area, offering a combination of affordable housing at $9,476 per square foot, abundant green spaces with 188 parks and playgrounds, and excellent transportation connectivity with the most bus stops in the territory. The North District followed closely in second place, while Sha Tin and the Eastern District took third and fourth place, respectively. The survey also revealed that safety played a major part in determining the most desirable places to live. Yau Tsim Mong, which consists of Yau Ma Tei, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Mong Kok, topped the charts with a staggering 8,883 reported crimes between January and October 2024. On the other hand, the North District emerged as the safest with just 586 reported crimes. Hong Kong districts with the highest cost per square foot were also listed, with Central and Wester

Everything you need to know about the 2025 Cheung Chau Bun Festival: competitions, tickets, and travel tips

Everything you need to know about the 2025 Cheung Chau Bun Festival: competitions, tickets, and travel tips

Hong Kong’s quirkiest tradition is back – the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, where the famous bun scrambling competition and Piu Sik parade turn this sleepy island into a unique spectacle. Want to experience it all yourself? Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of it. What is the Cheung Chau Bun Festival? Also known as the Cheung Chau Jiao Festival, the Cheung Chau Bun Festival is one of Hong Kong’s most beloved and unusual traditions.  According to legends, Cheung Chau was struck by a devastating plague during the late Qing dynasty. To dispel the disaster, islanders gathered to pray to Pak Tai, a Taoist deity, to help drive away the disease and evil spirits. Deity statues were also paraded along village lanes, while buns were offered to appease the gods and spirits. The plague eventually subsided, and since then, residents have been expressing their gratitude to Pak Tai for bringing peace and safety to the island. Over time, these rituals evolved into the lively festival that we see today. In 2011, this unique local festival was inscribed onto the third national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.   When is the Cheung Chau Bun Festival? The Cheung Chau Bun Festival occurs on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, coinciding with the celebration of the Buddha's Birthday in Hong Kong. For 2025, that day lands on May 5. The Piu Sik parade will occur on the same day in the afternoon, while the bun scrambling competition will take place later at night. Photograph:

When and Where: 2025 Wan Chai drone show The show kicks off at 8pm on May 1 over Victoria Harbour near the Wan Chai Temporary Promenade. The performance will last around 12 minutes and is completely free to watch – but be sure to arrive early to find a prime spot as the place will fill up fast.  Best spots to watch the drone show in Hong Kong Since the drone show will be held at the Wan Chai harbourfront area, the best places to view the show will be the Wan Chai Temporary Promenade and HarbourChill. You can also try your luck further down by Wan Chai Ferry Pier or the Golden Bauhinia Square, but do note that certain areas will be closed off or have limited visibility affected by angles. How to get there There are several ways in which you can easily get to the Wan Chai harbourfront area: MTR: Get off at the Exhibition Centre MTR station and take exit A2. Follow the signs and walk for a few minutes via the footbridge to get to the harbourfront. New yakiniku restaurant opens in the heart of Central

New yakiniku restaurant opens in the heart of Central

Hong Kong has no shortage of yakiniku spots, but this newcomer is already sitting high up on our list. Sitting on Wyndham Street among the chaos of the LKF area, Yakiniku Sho brings something different to the table. It's a straightforward Japanese-Korean barbecue joint where quality Wagyu meets the soulful flavours of Korean home cooking – all at prices that won't make your wallet weep. Photograph: Jenny Leung The restaurant offers two omakase-style sets featuring the finest A5-grade Japanese Black Wagyu and a selection of rare cuts based on what's available each day. The $490 'Don't Think Yasu' set offers six premium cuts that might include anything from velvety Misuji shoulder to wine-marinated Hokkaido pork ribs, while the $790 'Don't Think Sho' adds premium touches with additions like Wagyu tartare and Hokkaido scallops draped in salmon roe. Everything's grilled right at your table – no fuss, just good meat cooked properly. Photograph: Courtesy Yakiniku Sho What makes Yakiniku Sho different from the rest is the Korean dishes that are anything but some half-hearted fusion gimmick. Recipes were passed down from the owner’s mother, including the homemade kimchi (fermented for three years), spicy tofu hotpot that comes bubbling to your table, and traditional Korean-style steamed egg stuffed with crab meat. They've also got a decent range of sake with pairings chosen to complement both the rich beef and the bolder Korean flavours. While the sets are the stars, à la carte o
